The Community Training Centre (CTC) provides 40 full time training places for 15 to 21 years olds and all are paid a Government training allowance. The CTC is committed to providing quality education for young people from the local community who for whatever reason fell out of the traditional school system.
CTC Trainees can build up qualifications and experience which will help them gain employment on completion of their time here in LYCS. Our philosophy encourages people to be aware of their own human power, inner self belief and how to use that positive energy to effect real change in their life.

Programme descriptions
FETAC Level 3 – This course gives trainees an introduction to various subject areas. It is suited for someone who has left school with no (or a poor) Junior Certificate. FETAC/NCVA modules are completed by building up a portfolio of work in a particular area. On completion of 8 modules at level 3 (including mandatory ones) a learner will achieve a Major Award at level 3.
FETAC Level 4 – This course is aimed at people who have completed their Junior Certificate or Leaving Certificate but are finding it difficult to progress to further education or training. Learners will complete a total of 8 modules by building up a portfolio of work and by sitting a short examination (in some subject areas). It is hoped that learners will progress from this programme to employment or further education and training courses.
The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) – this is an accredited computer-training course, which consists of seven stages or modules. Trainees can take one module at a time whilst in LYCS. On completion of all seven modules, the trainee will receive his/her ‘Driving Licence’. This certificate is recognised in each of the EU member states as well as all business companies.
Work Experience - LYCS assists young people who are finding it difficult to find employment. We can help young people find work placements and/or employment. We have developed links with various employers who we regularly place learners with for short periods of work experience. This assists young people gain valuable experience in the workplace. We can also assist young people prepare their CV's and Job Applications.

Progression Routes
Throughout their time in LYCS, trainees are offered assistance in job seeking, and finding further education and training. On completion of their time in the CTC, many of our trainees go straight into employment, some begin apprenticeships and others continue to develop their skills further education and training.
LYCS now has in place a tracking system which enables us to support trainees for a 6 month period after they leave LYCS. Within the tracking system we offer guidance, reassurance, help in job/course seeking and encouragement.
LYCS trainees have progressed to gain employment in Retail, Home Help and Child Care but the majority went onto do PLC Courses in Travel and Tourism, Sports Management and Child Care.
Many more have progressed onto college studying Home Care, Child Care, Travel and Tourism, Sports and Leisure and Plumbing. To find out more about progression routes for young people who leave school without formal qualifications, contact LYCS today.
